The Nintendo Switch 2 has officially been recognized for its contributions to the gaming industry, taking home the prestigious Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Award (METI) at this year’s Japan Game Awards. The ceremony, organized by the Japanese Computer Entertainment Suppliers’ Association (CESA), was held on September 23, 2025, in Tokyo, just ahead of the Tokyo Game Show, which kicked off on September 25.

The METI Award is presented to products or innovations that have significantly advanced the video game industry, whether through technological breakthroughs, exceptional design, or broadening the medium’s reach. In awarding the Nintendo Switch 2, the judges praised the console for its influence on the Japanese console market, noting how it has shaped gameplay experiences and expanded the possibilities of portable and home gaming alike.

In addition to the Switch 2’s recognition, Atlus and Sega’s highly anticipated JRPG ReFantazio swept the Grand Award, the highest honor of the evening. The game stood out among fierce competition, besting ten other nominees including Elden Ring Nightreign, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, which each received Awards for Excellence.

Several other games were celebrated for their innovation and achievements. Odd Meter’s third-person adventure Indika earned the Game Designers Award, while Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket received the Movement Award for its creative mobile card gameplay. Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, which sold over one million copies in just three days, was recognized with the Breakthrough Award. Additionally, Sony’s PlayStation Store received a Special Award for its long-standing contribution to the gaming ecosystem and digital distribution.

The recognition of the Nintendo Switch 2 underscores not only its hardware capabilities but also its pivotal role in shaping modern gaming culture. Its hybrid design, expansive game library, and ability to deliver immersive experiences both at home and on the go have made it a benchmark for innovation in the industry. The award also signals how influential Japanese console development continues to be in the global gaming market.

With the Tokyo Game Show now underway, fans can expect more announcements, gameplay reveals, and opportunities to experience the Switch 2 alongside other celebrated titles. As gaming continues to evolve with new technologies, platforms, and creative approaches, the Nintendo Switch 2 remains a symbol of the industry’s growth and its ability to capture players’ imaginations.
